In a recent article on Lead Magnets, I made the case for why every service business should be using lead magnets to connect with prospects. (Give it a read if you don’t already know about lead magnets and their benefits).
In this article, I’m going to help you design a lead magnet landing page that gets visitors to take action and sign up for your magnet.Â
Overall, this is a relatively simple page to design and build, but there are some key components that will help ensure your success.
Step 0 – The Lead Magnet Itself
Before you begin to design this page, make sure that your lead magnet is genuinely useful. Does it help your prospects solve a problem or get closer to their goals in a clear and concise way? If you answered yes, you’re off to a good start. If not, go back to the drawing board and re-work your lead magnet until the answer is yes.
Step 1 – The Main Headline
This is the first thing visitors will read. If it doesn’t resonate, they will probably bounce. Answer this question: What is the primary benefit they will receive by using your lead magnet? That’s pretty much it. If you can include details about how long it will take, or how easy it will be, try to include that.
Step 2 – Supporting Details
This section supports your primary benefit in your main headline. How and why will the lead magnet help them achieve the promise you laid out in the headline? Be specific, use bullet points when possible for easy reading.
Step 3 – Social Proof
Add some kind of social proof to help convince the visitor that it’s worth it. Testimonials or reviews are great.
Step 4 – Make it Real-ish
If your lead magnet is an ebook, white-paper, report, etc. Give it a cover page and create a mockup that looks like a real physical book or report. Even though your magnet is digital, this will help make it feel more real and substantial to your prospect.
If you don’t have graphic design skills, you can use a site like PlaceIt, or hire someone to do it for you on a platform like Fiverr.
Step 5 – Automate It
Use a tool like Mailerlite to automatically deliver your lead magnet. This takes the burden off of you, and ensures that your prospects can access your lead magnet anytime of day or night.
Step 6 – Follow Up
Don’t neglect this important step. Follow up with people who have downloaded your lead magnet. Find out if it helped them in some way, and continue to add value by sending them useful content over time.
